Summary

American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the El Yunque National Forest, is seeking TWO Members to support in providing visitors with standardized information alongside Forest Service Staff.

Location Details/Description: Sabana Recreation Area, El Yunque National Forest, Puerto Rico

The El Yunque National Forest is the only tropical rainforest in the national forest system. At nearly 29,000 acres, it is one of the smallest in size, yet one of the most biologically diverse of the national forests hosting hundreds of animal and plant species, some of which are found only here.

Position Overview:

Primary duties include visitor management practices, processes, methods, and procedures that include the following:

  1. Informs the public of Forest Service recreation rules and regulations, traffic control, accident prevention, picnic area operations, visitor information services, reservation operation and miscellaneous recreation program activities.
  2. Answers routine questions that require knowledge of a limited variety of facts, events, circumstances, personalities, and natural characteristics identities with the site.
  3. Checks the usage and condition of public use areas, trails, and other reaction areas for safety, fire, sanitation and maintenance reasons. Collects, compiles, and reports routine visitor and resource use statistics.
  4. Performs routine daily opening and closing procedures and assists with general tasks.
  5. May operate a government vehicle.
  6. Assist with recreation and facility maintenance as scheduled.
  7. Performs other duties as assigned.

This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.

Schedule: 7:00am-5pm with availability on weekends/holidays

Position Benefits

Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $600/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

Housing: Housing is the responsibility of the member and not provided by ACE or the Forest Service.

Provided Training/Orientation: ACE members will receive position specific training and an orientation outlining ACE policies and procedures, clear guidance on prohibited activities, and networks for support. Support and training will be provided by the US Forest Service, but a foundational knowledge of information services, public service, and Forest Service culture and general practices, is expected.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Members must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident, as required byU.S. government contracts
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request).
  • Willing to undergo and must pass the required two-part criminal history check
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation.

Preferred:

  • Applicants should have an interest in Natural Resources, Environmental Education, or related fields, while all degrees are welcome. Applicants without a college degree who have equivalent work experience, and a desire to learn and grow professionally, are encouraged to apply.   • Fluent in Spanish.
  • Direct experience working in field environments.

Project Environment:

  • The work consists of performing a variety of standardized tasks in support of natural resource-dependent recreation programs. The work will be performed primarily outside in varying weather conditions, with long periods of standing or walking, hiking and occasionally moderate to heavy lifting.
