Visitor and Resource Protection Member - Capital Reef National Park

Summary: American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with Capital Reef National Park is seeking One Member(s) to serve as a Visitor and Resource Protection Member and assist NPS Staff with a mixture of natural resource management and visitor protection duties focused on trail patrols, graffiti removal and other resource protection related projects.

End Date: October 21, 2022 *a 26-week minimum commitment is required *

Location: Capital Reef National Park. Located in south-central Utah in the heart of red rock country, Capitol Reef National Park is a hidden treasure filled with cliffs, canyons, domes and bridges in the Waterpocket Fold, a geologic monocline (a wrinkle on the earth) extending almost 100 miles. AmeriCorps: This position may be eligible for a 900-hour ($3,097.50) AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of service term. Additional enrollment is required.

Living Allowance: ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $525/week to offset the costs of housing, food, and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

Housing: The selected member will be provided housing by the park, at no additional cost.

Position Description:

This placement involves hiking several miles a day on consecutive days, driving long distances on unimproved roads, backpacking overnights carrying a heavy pack on patrols, all taking place in a desert environment which will include extreme heat, monsoons and flash floods, insects, and dusty conditions.

Visitor & Resource Protection duties include: patrolling backcountry roads, trails and off-trail routes; contacting park visitors in backcountry/wilderness settings; explaining park regulations and safety issues; monitoring trail, road, and spring conditions; conducting informal resource condition assessments; conducting minor maintenance to signs, primitive campsites, and trailheads; assisting with issuing backcountry permits; and assisting the V&RP staff with emergency responses such as emergency medical services, search & rescue, and flash flood response.

Resource Management duties include: participating in the park's graffiti removal and prevention program by mitigating damage to rock walls, contacting visitors about graffiti's impact on the park and installing signs; maintaining a presence on park trails and canyon routes to educate visitors about graffiti and other resource damage.

Qualifications: Applicants for the position must hold or be pursuing a bachelor's degree and/or have experience in interpretation, cultural resource management, environmental studies, history, ecology, biology, natural resource management, recreation management, park management, or a related discipline. The ACE Member will be expected to be resourceful, adaptable, and able to serve comfortably alone or in a group.

Required:

  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request).
  • Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks.
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to handle physically demanding field duties, hiking several miles a day, backpacking overnight, carrying a heavy pack on patrols; all taking place in a desert environment which will include extreme heat, insects, and dusty conditions.
  • ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 by the time they start their term or request a medical or religious exemption.

Preferred:

  • Skills such as technical canyoneering, rock climbing, and/or EMS training
  • Bilingual applicants are encouraged and welcome.
