American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the Bureau of Land management, is seeking 1 wildlife technician to contribute to wildlife management projects alongside BLM Staff. Location Details/Description: Roswell, NM

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Roswell Field Office (RFO) wildlife staff manages over 1.5 million acres of public land in southeastern New Mexico. This includes 4 Areas of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) and 1 National Conservation Area. The habitat types found throughout the field office are broad and include shinnery-oak sand country, chihuahua desert grassland, riparian along rivers and streams, wetlands, and pinon-juniper woodland. One of our ACECs supports the largest naturally occurring wetland in southeast New Mexico. We also manage a number of federally listed threatened and endangered species, as well as some state and BLM listed sensitive species. We monitor and implement various habitat improvement projects including wildlife waters, fence removal, invasive plant species removal, native vegetation plantings, prescribed fire, and river/stream improvements. RFO wildlife staff also assists the lands and minerals side of the office with wildlife decisions regarding oil, gas, and renewable energy development. The wildlife biologists in the RFO direct the wildlife habitat management program within the framework of multiple use management.

Position Overview: The selected candidate will participate in various activities in the field office including:

  • Survey and monitor pronghorn passes built in fences
  • Check wildlife waters and identify maintenance needed on the systems
  • Assist in the completion of maintenance on wildlife waters
  • Input and analyze data collected on the Lesser-Prairie Chicken
  • Assist with fish, riparian vegetation, and stream monitoring
  • Assist with rangeland vegetation monitoring
  • Assist with surveys on Threatened and Endangered species and other wildlife species
  • Help with various habitat improvement projects including tree plantings, fence construction, and wildlife water construction
  • Learn the various aspects of National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents, and how they are used within the federal government

The selected candidate will be a functioning member of the Wildlife staff. Being a part of the team will provide direct exposure to this career. They also may have the opportunity to spend days with range management specialists, hydrologists, archaeologists, and outdoor recreation planners.

Position Benefits

Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $800/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a federal hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. PLC projects also include specific eligibility requirements such as age and citizenship. Please contact ACE staff with questions about eligibility or view general information online here.

Housing: Housing is the responsibility of the member and not provided by ACE or the BLM.

Relocation Allowance: ACE members will have access to up to $500 to be used for eligible relocation expenses. Further details regarding distribution of these funds will be provided during the interview process.

Provided Training/Orientation: ACE members will receive position specific training and an orientation outlining ACE policies and procedures, clear guidance on prohibited activities, and networks for support. Specific training may include wildlife management techniques. Other training opportunities will be available to fit the interest of the candidate.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Strong interest in understanding wildlife management on our public lands
  • Members must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident, as required by U.S. government contracts
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request).
  • Willing to undergo and must pass the required two-part criminal history check
