Summary: American Conservation Experience (ACE), a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS) is seeking a Cultural Resources Member interested in dedicating 11 weeks to support Bandelier National Monument with archeological site documentation, preservation treatments, museum management, and interpretation and educational programming.

The Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program (CRDIP) is a professional development internship that introduces students, from backgrounds historically underrepresented in the National Parks, to career opportunities within Cultural Resource Management in the NPS. Applicants must be 18-30 (up to 35 for Veterans) and either A) in pursuit of a higher education degree or B) still be within two years of graduation from a degree program. CRDIP participants will have the opportunity to attend several professional development webinars as well as write blogs or create videos about their projects throughout the summer.

Location: Bandelier National Monument protects over 33,000 acres of rugged but beautiful canyon and mesa country as well as evidence of a human presence here going back over 11,000 years. Petroglyphs, dwellings carved into the soft rock cliffs, and standing masonry walls pay tribute to the early days of a culture that still survives in the surrounding communities.

Living Allowance: ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $480/week to offset the costs of housing, food, and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

Housing: Park housing will be provided at no cost. It will include single occupancy bedrooms with shared bathrooms, kitchens, etc. No housing unit has an occupancy greater than 4 people.

AmeriCorps: This position may be eligible for a 300-hour AmeriCorps Education Award ($1,342.86) upon successful completion of service hours.

Position Description: ​​The ACE member will assist in a range of cultural resource management opportunities to assist park staff with archeological site documentation, preservation treatments, museum management, and interpretation and educational programming. The description is intentionally broad in scope to help the ACE member develop, inform, and potentially focus their career development and path beyond the internship. Tasks will include fieldwork to record and document ancestral Pueblo sites, architectural stabilization for frontcountry sites, museum object inventories and basic museum tasks, and office work to finalize paper and digital forms and data. Developing social media (short text and photos) highlighting park cultural resource management activities may also be included. The ACE member will also assist with interdisciplinary resource management tasks at the park, as time and interest allows.

Qualifications:

Required

  • Competitive applicants will hold or be pursuing a bachelor's degree in cultural resource management, anthropology, archeology, history, museum studies, historic preservation or other related field
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request)
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
  • ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 by the time they start their term or request a medical or religious exemption
