CRDIP Interpretive and Media Intern USDA Forest Service Nat'l HQ

Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with US Forest Service is seeking ONE Interpretive and Media Intern interested in dedicating 10 weeks in support of the National Forest Service. The Interpretive and Media Intern will primarily be responsible for creating content that combines web sites, social media, and smart phone apps with the history of minority populations in National Forests.

This excellent opportunity is ideal for an enthusiastic young professional who is deeply committed to the preservation of our national forests. Applicants must have strong interest in a career in cultural resource management.

Start Date: May 23, 2016

End Date: July 29, 2016.

Duration: An 11 week commitment is required

Location: USDA Forest Service National Headquarters, Washington D.C.

Compensation: $400/week, $640 relocation bonus

AmeriCorps: Interns in this position may be eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award Program (EAP). The EAP opportunity is for a successful term of service with an award to the Corps member upon completing 300 hours of service.

Housing: Housing will be provided within the DC metropolitan area in the form of a hotel room or apartment.

Position Description: This is an exciting project combining web sites, social media and smart phone apps with the history of minority populations in National Forests. The Intern will research background information on historic sites with themes such as the Underground Railroad, Chinese mining and logging work camps, Spanish colonial transportation, and slavery at early iron furnaces. Results will be incorporated into a variety of interpretive media including way-finding tools similar to geocaching; social media based history programs, and georeferenced web-based maps.

Qualifications: Candidates must possess skills in writing and historical research. An interest in new methods of communication and two-way information sharing in the context of historic interpretation is a must. A college degree is not required but preference will be given to those enrolled in an academic program similar to history.

Required: 

  • Internship is available to US Citizens and Green Card holders only.
  • Intern must be between the age of 18 and 35
  • A valid driver's license and a clean driving record, (documentation to be provided upon request).
  • Ability to undergo a federal criminal background check.
  • Deep interest in history, cultural resources, anthropology, environmental studies, conservation or closely related topic
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

The interns must be willing to represent ACE and the USFS in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner. Drug users should not consider applying, as ACE reserves the right to require drug testing.
