Summary: American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument is seeking One Member to contribute to Natural Resource Management projects alongside park Staff.

Location: Sunset Crater Volcano is the youngest volcano in the San Francisco Volcanic Field. Its eruption, around the year 1085, displaced area residents, buried homes, and radically altered the landscape below O'Leary Peak. People who lived in the area told stories of the eruption that survive to the present day, and modern-day residents of this volcanic field include their descendants as well as the descendants of immigrants from around the world. The site was made into a national monument by President Herbert Hoover on May 26, 1930, to protect its geologic formations. In 1990 the name was changed to Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. Today, the monument occupies 3,040 acres and is surrounded by Coconino National Forest.

Living Allowance: ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $800/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

Housing: Housing is the responsibility of the member and not provided by ACE or the park. Local candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

Scheduling: Monday-Friday 8am-5pm (other 40 hour schedules are possible)

Position Description: The intern will help to repair Cultural Landscapes through native plant restoration and invasive plant control activities. Fieldwork will include the removal of non-native plants and native plant seed collection and planting. Park staff will also mentor the intern and provide lab insect training, field botany research training, and acoustic research education. Insect lab work will involve specimen identification, sorting, labeling, photography and database management. Acoustic research will involve the recording of natural soundscapes and analysis of anthropogenic noise.

This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. PLC projects also include specific eligibility requirements such as age and citizenship. Please contact ACE staff with questions about eligibility.

Qualifications:

Required

  • Members must be US citizen or Permanent Resident, as required to comply with U.S. government contracts.
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request).
  • Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 or have requested and been granted a medical or religious exemption to vaccination by the time they start their term.
  • Ability and willingness to work long hours in extreme heat or humidity, hike several miles a day, and carry a pack weighing up to 20 pounds.

Preferred Skills:

  • Knowledge of scientific research, natural resources and scientific field work.
  • Deep interest natural resource management, native plant restoration, and entomology.
  • Competitive applicants will have relevant experience in subject areas such as scientific research, environmental science, entomology or other related fields.
