Summary: American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with John Muir National Historic Site is seeking One Member(s) to serve as a Natural Resource Member and assist NPS Staff with biological monitoring projects.

End Date: December 30, 2022 *a 52-week minimum commitment is required *

Living Allowance: ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $840/week to offset the costs of housing, food, and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

Housing: Housing is the responsibility of the member and not provided by ACE or NPS. A Living Allowance stipend

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a hiring authority upon completion of their term of service.

Position Description:

The responsibilities of the Natural Resource Member will include maintaining and enhancing the natural and cultural landscapes of the park units, conducting biological and ecological inventories, monitoring of resources, leading stewardship projects, and restoring native and cultural lands by removing invasive species and promoting native vegetation. Duties will be performed primarily outdoors. Temperature and weather extremes can be encountered in the performance of outdoor duties. The member is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow staff/members or resources. The member will be working outdoors and may be exposed to heat or cold, high humidity, stinging and biting insects, poison oak, and inclement weather. Specific duties will include:

  • Identifying and monitoring target species and populations of native and invasive plant species.
  • Assisting in providing invasive plant management control, using both manual and chemical techniques.
  • Collecting and maintaining field data, including GIS and field notes, using standard protocols.
  • Maintaining administrative documentation for resource management reporting.
  • Help coordinate the park's involvement with the California Phenology Project, including collecting data, recruiting and training high school interns, and giving programs to school groups.
  • Assisting with other biological inventory and monitoring projects including photopoint, water quality, and wildlife monitoring.
  • Assisting in planning and programming of natural resource management projects.
  • Additionally, the ACE Natural Resource Intern will assist with conducting youth and volunteer stewardship and resource education programs and activities.
  • Helping to train and manage the work and schedules of interns and volunteers.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request).
  • Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks.
  • Effective communication skills with diverse audiences.
  • Ability to relate well with youth and volunteers in the field and serve as leader, mentor and role model;
  • This position requires physical exertion such as walking long distances over hot, dry, and rough surfaces while carrying up to 40 lbs.; bending, crouching, stooping, lifting or reaching.
  • Knowledge of invasive species, ecology, and natural resource management.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Preferred:

    • Competitive applicants for this position can hold or be pursuing a minimum of a bachelor's degree and/or have relevant experience in subject areas such as environmental science, natural resource management, ecology, wildlife biology, or other related field.
    • Knowledge of National Park Service.
    • Experience working with youth and education.
    • Bilingual applicants are encouraged and welcome. Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese are especially useful in this park.
    • Deep interest in entering the public service field as a natural resource professional.


Work Schedule: Duties will primarily be carried out Monday-Friday. This member may have projects that begin very early and/or go late into the day and may have weekend duties as well. Bi-weekly totals should not exceed 80 hours. Time off will be granted.
