Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site preserves Connemara, the home of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and writer Carl Sandburg. Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site (CARL) is located in western North Carolina about 30 minutes southeast of Asheville, NC. The site is the last home of Carl Sandburg (1878 - 1967), poet, biographer, folk singer, social activist, and Pulitzer Prize-winning author. His wife and family raised champion dairy goats; the park continues to maintain a small herd. The 264-acre park features an historic home, barn and outbuildings and over five miles of wooded trails.

Position Overview: Invasive exotic vegetation is encroaching upon and displacing native plants in many areas of Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site (CARL). Of greatest concern are two globally rare vegetation associations both documented to be of high conservation value, particularly because these plant communities, and the rare and endemic species occurring within them, are not found on many other national park holdings. The intern will directly assist in conserving rare plant communities, which helps further the NPS mission of resource protection and preservation. The project will maintain the native plant communities in a good condition allowing for continued enjoyment by visitors and fosters the ongoing interpretive/educational opportunities regarding the importance of natural resources and native plant species. The intern will work directly with the park's Biological Science Technician, who will provide training and oversight on identification of plant species and methods of eradication of invasive species. The intern will gain exposure to the agency and have the ability to shadow and assist in other areas of park resource management also.

This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.
