American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS) is seeking ONE Resource Management Member to assist in all aspects of Minute Man National Historical Park's Biodiversity project alongside NPS Staff.

Location Details/Description: Minute Man National Historical Park, Concord, MA

Located in the Greater Boston area, Minute Man National Historical Park preserves structures, landscapes, museum collections, and artifacts associated with the opening battles of the American Revolution, which occurred April 19th, 1775. The park also preserves resources related to America's literary tradition and agricultural heritage.

Position Overview: Assist with youth-oriented bioblitz and biodiversity programs at the newly acquired Barrett Farm Unit to celebrate land conservation and stewardship. Engage youth, citizen scientists, naturalists, and ecologists in field training programs to better understand the areas diversity of flora and fauna. Compare gathered data with historical data and develop social media postings, web articles, and document land conservation recommendations.

This project will engage youth interns to work alongside park interpretation staff, resource management staff, and park partner staff to build professional work skills, cultivate leadership abilities, and to encourage resource stewardship ethics in their communities and beyond. Specific objectives include:

  • Provide paid service opportunities for 10-week training and career development for an individual between the ages of 18 and 30 and/or veterans 35 years old at Minute Man National Historical Park.
  • Introduce interns to agency mission, history, and values, career opportunities in the NPS, as well as local NPS sites in the Boston metropolitan area.
  • Introduce interns to complexities of resource management at Minute Man National Historical Park (NHP) and provide opportunities to lead stewardship activities throughout the park and in their local communities.
  • Provide interns with opportunities to develop proficiency with public speaking, volunteer coordination, and resource interpretation, and a bioblitz.
  • Foster NPS mentor relationships to deepen intern knowledge of and connection to public lands.

This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.

Schedule: The internship will commence in mid May 2024 and extend 10 weeks. The daily weekday schedule includes M - F, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm in the Eastern Time Zone. One weekend program will be included in the position. Federal holidays not worked during this position include Memorial Day, Junteenth, and Independence Day.

Position Benefits

Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $820/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a federal hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. Housing: Housing is the responsibility of the member and not provided by ACE or NPS.

Travel Reimbursement: ACE members will have access to up to $500 to be used for eligible travel expenses like trips into Boston and/or commuting.

Provided Training/Orientation: ACE members will receive position specific training and an orientation outlining ACE policies and procedures, clear guidance on prohibited activities, and networks for support. Specific training may include park orientation training, handling museum collection protocols and archeological record protocols.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Members must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident, as required by U.S. government contracts
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request).
  • Willing to undergo and must pass the required two-part criminal history check
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation.

Preferred:

  • Competitive applicants for this position can hold or be pursuing a Bachelors Degree and/or have relevant experience in subject areas such as Environmental Science and Geographic Information Systems.
  • Knowledge of Biology, Botany, Wildlife, and apps such as iNaturalist.
  • Ability and willingness to work out of doors, communicate with the public, engage volunteers, and work independently and with peers.
  • Deep interest in geographic information systems, biodiversity and ecology.

Physical Demands, Work Environment and Working Conditions:

  • Physical Demands: Requires standing, walking, hiking, carrying, using hands to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, talking and hearing. Manual dexterity required for use of various field tools, computer keyboard/mouse and other office equipment]. Required to stoop, kneel, climb stairs, and/or crouch]. Requires ability to walk over rough terrain and work outside in variable field conditions.
  • Vision Requirements: Requires close, distance, peripheral and depth perception vision as well as the ability to focus.
  • Weight Lifted or Force Exerted: Frequently moves up to 5 lbs., ability to move up to 20 pounds.
  • Environmental: Outdoor and indoor conditions. Work environment conditions can change frequently; working under adverse weather conditions and in various climates. Mix of indoor and outdoor work conditions; indoor air quality is good and temperature is controlled.
  • Noise Environment: The position may include battery operated devices for data recording or battery powered hand tools. Moderate noise such as in a business office with equipment and light traffic. An adjacent airport generates airplane and helicopter noises.
  • Travel: This position does not require travel outside of the Metropolitan Boston area.

Environmental Conditions/Hazards: The ACE member(s) may encounter environmental conditions/hazards including extreme heat or cold, rocky terrain, swamp or wetland conditions, biting insects, and potentially dangerous wildlife such as ticks and stinging bees. The member is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow staff/members or resources.

Vehicle and Equipment Use/Safety: If a vehicle is required for the accomplishment of the duties, one will be provided by the NPS or ACE. Any tools required for the accomplishment of the duties will be provided by the NPS. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE), typically provided by the NPS, will be mandatory for any activity that requires it. Strict adherence to NPS and ACE equipment training, certification and safety protocols is required.
