Summary: American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service is seeking TWO Career Experience and Exploration Alumni Members to work alongside Great Smoky Mountains National Park to gain real-world work experience in the field with at least four different work crew disciplines such as Resource Education, vegetation management, trail maintenance, wildlife management etc.

Location: Great Smoky Mountains National Park, based out of Oconaluftee Visitor Center in Cherokee, North Carolina.

Position Overview: The Career Experience and Exploration Alumni Members will be provided the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of careers possible within the National Park Service by promoting public education, job training in a variety of disciplines and early career mentorship alongside the Career Experience and Exploration youth members. The participants, through direct involvement in research and resource management activities, will gain an understanding of complex issues to understand and appreciate natural resources, and why and how to take care of public resources. The members will help remove exotic plant species, assist with Archaeology, Wildlife management and Fishery Science, improve trails and campgrounds as well as assist with public interpretative programs.

This individual placement is designed to foster professional growth by providing practical experience in land management principles and techniques. The internship will offer opportunities to develop key skills, including [mentoring, leadership, data collection and analysis, project management, team management, public speaking, environmental education and more. Furthermore, this placement facilitates valuable networking opportunities with professionals in land management agencies, including shadowing NPS work groups to gain exposure to various conservation fields such as wildlife management, facilities management, environmental education, trail restoration, etc.

Schedule: The member will contribute ~32 hours a week. Work days will be Monday through Thursday, 8 hours per day, 8am-4:30pm.

Position Benefits

Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~32 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $512/week to offset the costs of food, housing and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

Housing: Not provided by ACE or the site.

Provided Training/Orientation: ACE members will receive position specific training and an orientation outlining ACE policies and procedures, clear guidance on prohibited activities, and networks for support. Training may include: Orientation to the National Park Service, How to Apply for Federal Jobs, Putting together a Federal Resume, and opportunities to work in the field with other divisions such as Wildlife, Vegetation and Fisheries management, trail maintenance, and archaeology.

Qualifications:

Required

  • Members must be authorized to work in the United States. ACE does not provide sponsorship for employment visas.
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • A current and valid form of ID (will be required to provide copies of ID's upon hiring)
  • Willing to undergo and must pass the required criminal history checks
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation.

Physical Demands, Work Environment and Working Conditions:

  • Physical Demands: Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, hiking, carrying, using hands to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, talking and hearing. Manual dexterity required for [use of various tools, computer keyboard/mouse and other office equipment. Required to [stoop, kneel, climb stairs, and/or crouch.
  • Vision Requirements: Requires close, distance, peripheral and depth perception vision as well as the ability to focus.
  • Weight Lifted or Force Exerted: Frequently moves up to 20 lbs., ability to move up to 50 pounds.
  • Environmental: Outdoor and indoor conditions. Work environment conditions can change frequently, working under adverse weather conditions and in various climates. Mainly indoor, office environment conditions; indoor air quality is good, and temperature is controlled.
  • Noise Environment: Moderate noise such as in a business office with equipment and light traffic.
  • Travel: This position may require domestic travel.

Environmental Conditions/Hazards: The ACE member(s) may encounter environmental conditions/hazards including extreme heat or cold, rocky terrain, swamp or wetland conditions, biting insects, and potentially dangerous wildlife. The member is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow staff/members or resources.

Vehicle and Equipment Use/Safety: If a vehicle is required for the accomplishment of the duties, one will be provided by the NPS or ACE. Any tools required for the accomplishment of the duties will be provided by the NPS. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE), typically provided by the NPS, will be mandatory for any activity that requires it. Strict adherence to NPS and ACE equipment training, certification and safety protocols is required.
